Roland DGA’s DWX-43W chairside milling solution is designed to expand in-house treatment options and bring lab-quality and reliability to everyday dental restorative care.

When you hear the names of certain companies, you trust that their products will be developed and manufactured with much thought and attention to quality and reliability. Roland DGA is that kind of company. Founded 44 years ago, its parent company, Roland DG, has a long history in manufacturing a wide-variety of innovative products like dental milling solutions, wide-format inkjet printers, engravers and more. The company is also an affiliate of Roland Corporation, which I have known for years as their products are my personal brand of choice for digital music equipment.

Roland DGA has been the leading provider of dental milling solutions for dental laboratories for well over a decade and has now made these solutions available to clinicians for in-office use. Now, this includes the latest advancements to their chairside milling solution, the new DWX-43W. This solution enables dentists to expand in-house treatment options and bring lab-quality, innovation, and reliability to their practices for everyday restorative care.

Why Choose an In-Office Milling Solution?
Practices can build a reputation for technology and service by offering on-demand, in-house, lab-quality, highly esthetic dental restorations. The way dentists attract new patients has changed in our technology-filled society. Potential patients have access to internet searches and friends who openly share their experiences in person and on social media. Knowing that this type of convenience and expanded options for care are available can expand the reach of a practice. Many would travel a bit farther for a dentist who has more treatment alternatives and shorter wait times.

Same-day restorations are popular because what patient wants to spend extra time at the dental office? And dental professionals also would rather fill their schedules with new or returning patients rather than having a patient returnmultiple times for their restorative care. With the ability to customize and seamlessly integrate a digital workflow to suit the specific needs of their dental business, Roland’s DGSHAPE offers on-demand crowns, bridges, onlays, veneers, and more with its open-architecture eco-system platform.

The DWX-43W is equipped with many features that speed up the restorative process. Its dedicated CAM software decreases milling times by up to 20%, especially when using the “quick mill setting” for those who often use the same materials. With the new DGSHAPE ZTR-150D tooling, milling titanium custom abutments can be up to 20% faster than with the previous tooling, the company states.

Adding to the speed of the process is the ability to monitor the mill’s progress and/or milling status with the proprietary DGSHAPE CLOUD performance visualization software. Even though the dentist and staff go home at the end of the workday, the DWX-43W can keep working. Clinicians or staff can access the status for all DGSHAPE DWX milling solutions from any location, desktop, or mobile as an added value of ownership with no maintenance or membership fees. Users can monitor mill performance, productivity (usage patterns), mill maintenance, and more on the artificial intelligence-powered enhanced smart feature dashboard.

Another very productive upgrade to this unit is the built-in expanded capabilities. With the previous 42W models, milling titanium abutments required an AK-1 Abutment kit to replace the existing material adapter fixture inside the machine. The new internal material holder of the DWX-43W has been redesigned for built-in compatibility with AK-1 Material Adapters, reducing the need for the kit altogether, a $1,000 savings for users.

Filtering Out Needless Tasks
While the dental practice team enjoys working with patients and the dentist, not many relish the thought of cleaning the equipment. Other wet mills usually have some type of filter, and with that comes repeated costs and the need for someone to take on the task of replacing the filter and doing

routine maintenance. This again sets this in-office milling solution apart from its competition. Exclusive filter-free technology eliminates coolant tank filters, reducing the cost of use by 20%. Its automatic coolant jet optimization with a draining cycle reduces routine mill maintenance by 50%. The unit will automatically perform this task as long as the machine is on.

Increased Productivity and Decreased Costs
The DWX-43W includes these value-added accessories at no extra charge.

  • A total of 15 authentic DGSHAPE wet milling tools
  • The 6-pin material adapter(#ZV-42W) accessory for expanded milling capabilities and the ability to mill up to 6 units at a time
  • DGSHAPE CAM Software

This amounts to a $5600 total value provided free with DWX-43W purchase.

Meaningful Materials
Zirconia is strong, aesthetic, customizable, highly biocompatible, and a good option for some who may be allergic to porcelain-fused-to-metal type restorations. Using a fully-sintered zirconia material, Chairside Zirconia-Powered by Roland, with this chairside solution can increase production dollars per hour by up to 20% by making same-day zirconia restorations an option.  Also, as an alternative, Amber Mill Direct, a pre-crystalized lithium disilicate CAD/CAM milling block, requires no ceramic oven or firing. Both materials are multi-layered or multi-gradient providing natural translucency, and restorations come off the mill at full strength. The DWX-43W also is compatible with traditional lithium disilicates, glass ceramics, PMMA, hybrid ceramics, composite resins, and pre-mill titanium blanks.

DGSHAPE’s open architecture eco-system allows users to utilize their own choice of intraoral scanner, CAD software, and restorative materials.

Compared to other chairside solutions on the market that can range from $60-125K, there is strong value in Roland’s DWX-43W solution for about $30,000, according to Roland DGA. The technology can have a positive impact on both clinical and business sides of the practice. Giving patients the option for same-day aesthetically pleasing, lab-quality restorations and having the opportunity to expand services and your reputation are an ROI that will increase opportunities for growth.
